Calculate Gas Mileage – Easy to Use Formula to Figure Gas Mileage
As gas prices rise and the concerns over CO2 emissions mount, the first step to improve gas mileage is to calculate gas mileage in your car. After all, how do we improve upon our MPG if we do not yet know what it is?
There are several ways to calculate gas mileage, such as real-time gas mileage trackers, trip cost calculators, and downloadable apps for mobile devices. For the purposes of this article, however, we’ll be focusing on a simple formula to calculate gas mileage.
Here are the simple steps you should take to calculate MPG in your vehicle:
- Save your receipt at your next fill-up at the gas station, making sure to write down how much gas you put into the tank in addition to what the odometer reading was at that time.
- Do this every single time you fill-up, always making sure to pump the same grade of gasoline, and filling up at approximately 1/4 of a tank of gas consistently.
- Record these numbers in a notebook or an excel spreadsheet, recording all necessary information such as date, amount of gas pumped, odometer reading at the time fill-up, and amount paid per gallon, if you so desire.
- Calculate gas mileage by first calculating your miles driven. Odometer Reading 2 – Odometer Reading 1 = Miles Driven
- Finish the calculation: Miles Driven / Gallons Pumped at 2nd Visit = MPG
By using this formula to calculate gas mileage, you will be able to see if:
- your vehicle gets the EPA estimated MPG
- fuel economy devices you installed actually work
- fuel additives, such as acetone, have had any beneficial impact on your vehicle’s fuel economy
- changes in driving habits, hypermiling, and car maintenance increase fuel efficiency of your vehicle
