There is a famous anecdote from Alice in Wonderland Movie that can be one of the best ways to understand the significance of Goal Setting. Read this conversation between Alice and the cat carefully:
“Would you tell me which way I ought to go from here?” asked Alice….
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get,” said the Cat.
“I really don’t care where” replied Alice.
“Then it doesn’t much matter which way you go,” said the Cat.
Many of us are in a similar situation like that of Alice’s. We work hard and put our efforts in all possible directions but end up being disappointed. We need to direct all our efforts to a particular objective. Goals give direction to our life and help us stay focused. Once we decide what we need to achieve, we can easily walk ahead without wasting much time. It’s very important to set goals, they help us bridge the gap between where you are and where you aspire to be. Goals help us visualize our desired future.
Goal setting is one of the best self-motivation techniques. There are times we feel unhappy about the happenings in our lives and get bogged down feeling depressed; These low times would not exists if we have clearly set goals, once we know what has to be achieved, we are instinctively driven to excel. When we set our goals, there is a strong self determination to achieve it. Each day we work on achieving the goal, our actions and intentions are focused, and there is a sense of accomplishment and happiness in each step you take towards your goal. When we start working towards a goal passionately, negative things/people won’t bother us much.
It’s very important to define your goals properly. Goals have to be positive and must help one achieve something positive. More importantly goals need to be SMART, Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time bound. It’s important to have specific goals, avoid being ambiguous. E.g. I have to post five articles on my blog within a week. All your goals must be measurable; you must be able to track the progress at any point in time. Many people set unattainable goals and feel disappointed, people end up thinking they are not capable. It’s wise to be fair when you set goals, for instance your goal can’t be to lose 2 kg of weight in 2 days – it is not achievable, instead it must be – I have to lose 2kg in 2 weeks. Goals need to be realistic, dreamy goals that are unrealistic will not do. All the goals have to be time bound, unless we have a deadline, we don’t really start working seriously. A deadline will motivate us and inspire us to achieve our goals.
Properly set goals can help us lead better lives and help us be more successful. All businesses and companies work towards their target. When we know where to go, we reach faster as we stop wandering unnecessarily.
Set goals and succeed in life!
Goals are important there is great power that comes from setting and achieving goals.
