What a frustrating experience it can be to have to deal with a computer that keeps freezing up, keeps crashing, whose mouse pointer spends more time as an “hourglass” than an actual arrow, and whose response time is unbearably slower. It makes you wonder: Which one is slower, your computer, or the US economy?
Maybe it’s time you seriously considered performance tuning Windows. A computer is like a car. Both need periodic tune-ups in order to stay in order to stay in shape and to consistently deliver outstanding performance, reliability, speed, efficiency, and stability.
Performance tuning entails making sure that all aspects of the system are configured to run optimally. That means:
1) Your computer needs to be free of any viruses. You should run antivirus software on your PC. You can either run a scan periodically or you can have it run all the time, in the “background”, on your PC.
2) Your computer needs to be free of any “spyware”. Spyware is similar to a virus, in that gets downloaded to your machine through means of stealth. The main difference is that viruses are intent upon destroying your system or your data. Spyware is intent upon stealing data, spying on your computer usage, and even displaying pop-up advertisements against your will. You should run anti-spyware software on your PC to combat this.
3) The Windows Registry on your PC needs to be fully optimized and error-free. The Windows Registry is the master database used by Windows to store all of the information about every piece of hardware, every peripheral device, and every piece of software that has ever been connected to, installed on, downloaded to, and executed on your PC. Over time, this database can grow very large and bloated, making it difficult to traverse the database in search of information. Windows and most of the programs that you run on Windows all rely on the registry to either retrieve information from or write information to it. Also, errors can creep up in the database, due to obsolete or invalid links contained therein. An unoptimized registry can cause your PC to crash, to hang, to run slowly, or to become unstable, due to its inherent inefficiencies. Thats why you should run a registry repair utility on your PC periodically to fix these errors and to optimize the registry. This step alone can meet your most basic needs in terms of performance tuning Windows, as you can realize a significant speed boost when you clean up your registry.
4) Disk defragmentation can also cause your PC to slow down. Data written to your hard disk is most efficiently accessed if it is stored in one continuous space. But if data is scattered all over your hard disk, it can slow down your system, due to the lag time caused by this inefficient disk access scheme. Defragmenting your hard disk optimizes the data to make it easier to access it more quickly and efficiently.
5) Run a firewall on your PC to prevent hackers and malicious programs from gaining access to your system. A firewall manages all network connectivity into and out of your computer to ensure that your Internet browsing experience is safe. A firewall itself does not directly impact performance tuning Windows. But it provides protection against those external elements, such as viruses and spyware, from infiltrating your system, which would in turn cause these types of problems.
Performance tuning Windows is extremely crucial not only for the efficient operation of your PC, but also for the safety and integrity of the data stored on your PC.
