Everything about your once familiar life has suddenly changed due to your breakup, you feel empty, very vulnerable and all alone in the world. Time passes by so slowly which makes hours feel like days, you drench your pillow soaking wet with tears every night not knowing what to do next and have no desire to get out of bed and put on a brave face the next morning.
Loneliness is one of the common emotional stages you go through after a breakup. This stage can really throw your world into what feels like a tornado ripping through your life, it can destroy friendships you already have which leads to serious depression if not handled correctly.
You do not have to go through a breakup to experience loneliness, some people feel lonely even when they are in a relationship, they feel even though they are surrounded by other people and their partner is right beside them that nobody really understands them and find it very hard to connect with anybody.
What are some of the common signs of Loneliness?
• You feel everybody else in the world has friends and you do not
• When you are in a crowd you feel so disconnected from them
• You feel angry, defensive and critical about everything
• You are convinced there is something wrong with you and everybody knows it
• You think that other people do not understand your problems because they are so unique
• You are extremely self-conscious in everything you do
• When you do something wrong, you get extremely embarrassed
• Afraid to talk to strangers and refuse to engage in a conversations
• You feel extremely shy and scared of others even though you may know them
• Your self-esteem is very low
• Feeling anxious and sad believing no one knows how miserable and alone you feel
• You lose your ability to be assertive and feel “invisible”
• Refuse to accept change and do not want to try anything new
• Feeling as though nothing matters in life and contemplating ending it all
Some people try to numb these feelings with excessive alcohol, drugs and meaningless dates and parties which only prolong your recovery as the pain is left unattended and will never go away until it is dealt with.
It is better to face your loneliness head on and accept that it is a very strong emotion which you need to give the time and space to run its course while you learn to work through it properly.
