Word Search Puzzle Maker
Almost everybody, even children, enjoys solving puzzles, and one popular type of puzzle is word jumble or word search puzzles. These are puzzles where the solver has to search a grid of letters (which at first glance might appear to be completely randomly selected) for words hidden within the grid. The challenge of the puzzle comes from the facts that not all the letters are used as parts of words, and that the words can be in any direction at all, be that horizontal, vertical or diagonal, including such hard-to-spot directions as right to left and bottom to top.
The beauty of word search puzzles is that they are easy to understand – everybody knows what to do – but they can still be fascinating to solve. You might not expect a young child to solve the Times cryptic crossword or a killer sudoku puzzle, but they are definitely able to have a good go at word search puzzles.
Another attractive feature of word search puzzles, one that makes them particular suitable as an activity for children, and even ideal for use in education, is that the theme of the puzzle and the difficulty can easily be adjusted by the puzzle creator. The puzzle creator can choose words on whatever topic he likes, including perhaps words that he wants to introduce children to and/or remind them of the spelling of. Additionally, if creating puzzles for younger children, a puzzle creator may choose to create puzzles that avoid the hard-to-spot word orientations.
Creating a word search puzzle can basically be done two ways. The old fashioned way is simply to use a pen and paper and spend a lot of time trying to fit words together – as you can imagine this can be very tedious and time consuming. An easier approach is to use a computer – using word search puzzle maker software, all you need to do is enter a list of words, and the computer can easily generate a puzzle for you.
